Maryland ITLS

Instructor Information

Individuals seeking Maryland ITLS Instructor credentials need to review the following information. This includes Instructor Potentials, Instructor Candidates, Out-of-state Instructors seeking Maryland reciprocity, PHTLS Instructors seeking reciprocity, and expired Maryland ITLS Instructors seeking re-entry.
 

ITLS-BASIC and ITLS-ADVANCED INSTRUCTOR STATUS

Eligibility Criteria:
 
National or State certified EMS Provider, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, or Physician who is a current ITLS Provider or an ATLS certified Physician who has audited at least one ITLS Course.

For all candidates interested in becoming an Instructor:
 
A student must be ranked "Instructor Potential" during a provider course which encompasses a written score of at least 86, an excellent rating on the practical evaluation, and possess the qualities of a good instructor. 
The "IP" status is current only during the term for which the provider card is issued.
The "IP" must be recommended in writing by an Affiliate Faculty and the Course Coordinator or another instructor (2 recommendations).
The "IP" must submit an Instructor Application to Maryland ITLS.
The "IP" must submit a resume or curriculum vitae listing teaching credentials and experience.
BLS Providers need to complete the "Instructor Request" track.
For ALS Providers, a determination will be made whether the "IP" will follow the "Instructor Request" or "Instructor Candidate" track. (see below)
The "IP" must pay a $30 fee for new or reentry Instructor certification to "Maryland ITLS."

Instructor Request Track:

Insufficient teaching credentials determined by resume review:

The "IP" will be required to attend the ITLS Instructor Course. Upon successful completion, the student will become an Instructor Candidate.

Instructor Candidate Track:

Sufficient teaching credentials determined by resume review:

The "IP" must present lecture and practical portions of at least one ITLS class while being  monitored by an Affiliate Faculty member.

The "IP" must attend the teaching ITLS skills module.

The "IP" must work with an Affiliate Faculty member during a Patient Assessment Testing station.
Documentation of these evaluations must be submitted to the Maryland ITLS program.

Card issued:    Upon receipt and approval of all requirements by Maryland ITLS.

Term issued:    Two years

Renewal:         Assist in at least two ITLS courses during the certification period AND attend at least one Instructor Update during the two-year period. Any complaints filed on an Instructor will be evaluated and may prohibit renewal.

Instructor Responsibilities:
 
Notify the Maryland ITLS Program of any change of address or phone numbers. This may be done by highlighting the changed information on the course roster submitted when you teach.
Adequately prepare for lectures and skill stations. The use of supplemental slides, video tapes and handouts is allowed.
Attend faculty meetings for each course.
Participate in at least two classes during the two-year certification period.
Participate in at least one Instructor Update or Instructor course during the two-year certification period.
Contribute to the quality of the Maryland ITLS Program through fair and impartial treatment and assessment of students.
Report any concerns about any aspect of the ITLS Program to the Maryland ITLS Medical Director, Maryland ITLS Coordinator or Maryland ITLS Affiliate Faculty member.
