General Description
The Emergency Health Services (EHS) Department combines the experience and resources of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) and the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) to feature the first baccalaureate program of its kind in the nation.

Students through their studies gain a unique depth of experience in emergency helath services through this baccalaureate degree. The program stresses academic and clinical abilities, interpersonal and leadership skills and the capacity for appropriate judgement.

  • The major objectives of the degree program is to prepare students for work in various occupational settings relating to emergency health services systems. Primary emphasis is placed upon the development of leadership skills and the promotion of personal and professional growth. Graduates are prepared to: coordinate and manage emergency health systems;
  • interact effectively with other professionals in the emergency medical services system, as well as with community agencies and the general public;
  • satisfy certification requirements for EMT-Basic or EMT-Paramedic;
  • conduct or utilize research; and
  • pursue graduate study.
The Department of Emergency Health Services offers a unique perspective for the education of future EMS professionals. this is accomplished by providing a broad liberal arts and sciences education, which enhances the graduates' employment opportunities as prehospital providers and managers. The Department of Emergency Health Services also prepares graduates for advancement to graduate and professional studies.

WHAT ARE THE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE EMS FIELD?

Emergency Health Services (EHS), or Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as it is more generally referred to, is a relatively new field in the health care delivery system. The federal, state and local efforts of the past decade have resulted in innovative pr ograms designed to improve the quality of emergency health care services throughout the nation. In doing so, several new career fields have been created and opportunities exist for those involved in the administration and operation of modern EMS systems.

Health professionals are needed at all levels in today's emergency medical service system including federal, state, and local government agencies. Additionally, EMS activities are relevant to ambulance providers, fire rescue services, hospitals, industri al health services, military and volunteer organizations. Depending on experience and education, EMS health professionals will serve as emergency medical technicians, educators, supervisors, coordinators, planners, consultants, managers and directors. Opportunities for experience and advancement within EMS Systems will depend upon the individual's willingness to search out dynamic growing organizations and relocate when necessary.

In addition, the solid academic basis of the EHS baccalaureate degree can lead to more advanced studies such as Master of Public Health, Master of Science, Master of Hospital Administration and other health management degrees. The UMBC EHS Department offers a Master of Science degree with emphasis in EHS administration, policy and planning, epidemiology and preventive medicine, and EHS education. Undergraduate EHS majors may apply to the Combined Bachelor and Master of Science degree program. (limited to management majors only)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

There are two separate tracks within the Emergency Health Services Program, Management and Paramedic. The Paramedic Track requires special admission criteria and a specialized junior and senior year (see below).

Management track students are encouraged to enroll in the certificate program in Public Administration and Policy. Since many of the courses required for the certificate are also required for the EHS degree, students can gain additional credentialing by carefully selecting electives. Details can be obtained from a department advisor.

ADMISSION TO THE DEPARTMENT

Admission to UMBC is a prerequisite for admission to the EHS Department. After the student has been notified of acceptance to UMBC, an EHS Department application and declaration of major form should be obtained from, and returned to the EHS department office (Academic IV Building, Room 316). Admission to the paramedic track is competitive. EHS majors who intend to pursue the paramedic track should be aware of special course requirements in the junior and senior years. Early advisement is encouraged. Applications for the paramedic track are due March 31st preceding the junior year.

ADVISEMENT

Successful completion of the EHS Program requires thoughtful sequencing and careful attention to the program requirements; therefore, early and continuing advisement is necessary. Transfer students should seek pre-transfer advisement from the UMBC Admiss ions Office and the EHS department office. UMBC students will be assigned to a permanent EHS faculty advisor upon receipt of application forms.

All students at UMBC, regardless of major, are required to complete General Foundation Requirements (GFR). Students must take elective courses in Math, Science, Humanities, Social Science, and Foreign Culture or Language to fulfill the GER requirement. Some GFR requirements coincide with EHS degree requirements. Students are encouraged to work closely with their EHS faculty advisor in selecting GFR courses that will satisfy their individual interests.
